Factions and Reputation

Your faction standing affects how NPCs treat you. This guide covers stances and ways to change your standing.

Standing and stances

Standing moves through Hated, Neutral and Honored as you gain points. Points build within your current stance, and reaching its requirement moves you to the next stance.
Standing can also fall. Losing enough points moves you to the previous stance, but standing cannot fall below the first stance or rise beyond the last one.

Standing of a new character

The table shows the stance and points that a new character starts with toward each faction.

Every playable race belongs to Humans, and a new character starts with that faction's stance and points toward each faction.
Alignment
Hostile Hated Enemy 0 114
Hostile Elementals Hated Enemy 0 17
Humans Honored Ally 0 258
Neutral Neutral Neutral 0 38
Neutral Aggressive Neutral Neutral 100 0

Factions in combat

Your stance with a faction decides whether its NPCs count as allies, neutral, or enemies in combat.

Hated is an Enemy alignment, Neutral is a Neutral alignment and Honored is an Ally alignment. Whether an ability can hit a target also depends on which alignments that ability allows.
An Enemy relationship does not guarantee a creature attacks on sight, and a Neutral relationship does not guarantee it waits for you to attack. Whether a creature starts fighting also depends on its current behavior's aggression settings.

Changing standing

Creature kills, quests, and items can be set up to change your standing.

When a creature or quest grants a standing change, it can add or remove faction points. A point gain is limited by the faction's highest stance, and a loss by its lowest stance.

No creature, quest, or item on this site changes your standing.

Reputation panel

The Reputation panel of the character window lists the factions that are marked to appear there.

A faction can have a standing without appearing in the Reputation panel. That panel only adds entries for factions marked to appear there.
